Professional Ear Wax Removal

The build-up of ear wax can cause a variety of problems, including loss of hearing, balance problems, exacerbation of tinnitus, and general ear discomfort. During our ear health consultation, we can determine the most effective treatment option for you. This could include the administration of drops to soften the wax, gentle microsuction, ear irrigation, or a combination of these treatment options.

For the best results, we recommend softening your ear wax with Earol® (clinically treated olive oil) or olive oil ear drops for 2–3 days before your appointment. These products are available from our pharmacy.

If your ear wax has not been softened sufficiently before your appointment, or further softening is required, we'll provide you with olive oil ear drops free of charge and arrange another appointment at a convenient time.

How it works

A pharmacist uses a microscope and a low-pressure suction device to gently remove earwax from your ear canal.

Benefits

Microsuction is a quick procedure that doesn't use water, so it's cleaner and more comfortable than other methods. You can usually go home the same day and should notice an immediate improvement in your symptoms.

When it's used

Microsuction is recommended for people who shouldn't have water in their ears, such as those with a perforated eardrum, a history of thick ear discharge, or who have had ear surgery.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you should avoid strenuous activity for 1-2 days. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers if you experience any discomfort.

Side effects

Possible side effects include dizziness, discomfort, reduced hearing, infection, or trauma to the ear.

Symptoms of Ear Wax Build-Up

Ear wax build-up can cause a range of symptoms, including:
  • Hearing loss
  • Earache or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ear)
  • Vertigo (dizziness)
  • Ear infections
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to address the issue promptly to avoid further complications.
